        Delhi Sultanate

        A principal Muslim sultanate made up of multiple Muslim dynasties from 1206-1526 in North India, establishing an Islamic presence. The dynasties that ruled during that period were the Slave dynasty (1206-1290), Khilji dynasty (1290-1320), Tughlaq dynasty (1320-1413), Sayyid dynasty (1414-1451), and Lodhi dynasty (1451-1526).

        Former Slave

        Qutb al-Din Aibak was originally a Turkish slave who served under Muhammad Ghori, the ruler of the Ghurid Empire. After Ghori's campaigns in India, Aibak was appointed as the governor of the Indian territories.

        Conquest of Delhi

        After Muhammad Ghori's death in 1206, Aibak took advantage of the political vacuum created by the weakening of the Ghurid Empire. He led a military expedition to estabish control over northern India, capturing Delhi and establishing it as the capital of his new territory, the Delhi Sultanate. This Sultanate ruled India for the next few centuries." In 1206 Aibak declared himself as the Sultan (Leader) of Delhi.

        Safavid Empire

        The Safavid Empire (1501-1736) also known as Safavid Iran, was a prominent Persian state that established Twelver Shi'sm as the religion, located in today Iran. The Safavid Empire was established as the Mongol il-Khan government declined and the Safavids defeated numerous Turkish tribes.

        Birth of a New Leader

        Shah Ismail I was born in 1487. After the fall of the Timurid Empire, Ismail capitalized on the political instability in Persia. In 1501 he led forces composed of the Qizalbash(Turkic Warriors). After he captured Tabriz, the capital of Iran, Persia was unified under his rule

        Eventually the Safavid Power was overpowered by the Ottoman Empire which not only had superior technology but also outnumbered them.
